As a boy Lee aspired to be a cowboy or a baseball player in the major leagues but it soon became obvious that academics were more his calling than the pitchers’ mound or the wild west. Born in the small town of Muncie, Indiana, Lee grew up in the even smaller town of Cowan. He had a sister, brother, poodle, and cat, and is now a professor of economics at North Carolina State University.
He went to Cowan School throughout his whole life because in those days in Indiana most of the rural schools were K-12. In 1978 Lee was very proud when he got accepted to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana where he met his current spouse, Jackie. He completed his graduate studies at Indiana University in 1988, and he has lived in Wake County for 19 years, ever since he got offered a job here.
In his free time when he is not, quote, “working to feed the family,” Lee enjoys playing with his dog, reading books and watching the History Channel. The History of Salt is one of his favorite books. Although reading is certainly a pastime, be it the News and Observer or War and Peace, he also has written several books, the majority of them about the economic history. Lee writes out of interest for subjects. Right now he is writing a book on the founder of the News and Observer, Josephus Daniels. On vacation, Lee enjoys going to the beach with his family and his dog, a corgi named Martha. His favorite cartoon is Opus and is disappointed that it is only in the Sunday newspaper.
