Narrative:

“So long as you can sweeten another's pain, life is not in vain.” – Helen Keller

Jimmy grew up in a small town outside of Wake County. He lived with his parents and his five siblings. They lived on a farm of about fifty acres with a number of farm animals. During the early 1900s taking care of a farm was not simple. Many jobs were completed with the farmer’s own bare hands. Jimmy, being one of the oldest of the six children, had to help with numerous jobs on the farm. For example, he and his older brother would wash the dishes, milk the cow, plow the fields, and pick the cotton and the vegetables. Jimmy worked very hard on his farm. He knew that his family depended on the work that he completed. Family and community always came before friends. Jimmy enjoyed playing baseball with his friends, but he would sometimes skip games to pick cotton for his father. Jimmy was willing to help anyone who could use some assistance. He moved to Wake County fifty years ago for a job. Even after he retired, Jimmy continued giving to the community. Every Friday Jimmy meets with middle school students and teaches them the important lessons he learned as a child. In his spare time, Jimmy meets with friends in a doughnut shop to talk and just have a good time.
