401 Hillsborough Carpool Procedures

The downtown location of Exploris Middle school has been an essential part of the school's culture and success. At the same time, being downtown presents some challenges. Parking and carpool has never been easy for us, but we have managed by adapting over the years to change and by trying to use common sense.

Naturally, with our move to the new location come new procedures for running our car pool. Our carpool at the new 401 Hillsborough Street site has received a lot of attention and input from the City of Raleigh. In fact, the city required our landlord to hire, at considerable expense, a traffic engineer to do a study and submit a plan that will minimize the impact that our carpool activity has on the area traffic, while providing for the safety of students. The city planners involved in this process have told me in no uncertain terms that we must follow this plan to the letter. It will require complete cooperation, selfless behavior, and patience on our part. Please carefully read the information below and consult the aerial photo of the 401 Hillsborough Street site to understand what is required.

AM Student Drop-Off Procedures

  • All vehicles doing AM drop-off will turn south onto Harrington St. from Hillsborough St., queue up along the right side of the street, turn right into the rear parking lot, and exit the back of the parking lot by turning right onto W. Morgan St. (see diagram, green line).
  • All vehicles must turn right onto W. Morgan. Left hand turns onto W. Morgan are not permitted. Students should be prepared to get out of cars in the parking lot in a timely manner and enter the building.
  • No vehicles should be left unattended in the parking lot.

PM Student Pick-Up Procedures

We will have two dismissal times: single-family rider vehicles at 3:00 PM and carpool vehicles at 3:15 PM. We must observe these times, and carpool vehicles should not queue up before 3:15 PM. Also, it will be important for single-family rider vehicles to be on time.

Single-Family Riders

  • Students whose last names begin A-L and are single-family riders will be picked up at 3:00 PM in the Harrington Street parking lot (see diagram, green).
  • These vehicles should turn south onto Harrington Street from Hillsborough Street and queue up along the right side of Harrington Street turning right into the Harrington lot.
  • All vehicles exiting the Harrington lot will turn right onto W. Morgan Street.
  • Students whose last names begin M-Z and are single-family riders will be picked up at 3:00 PM in the West Street parking lot (see diagram, blue).
  • These vehicles should turn north onto West Street from Hargett Street and cue up along West Street.
  • All vehicles exiting the West Street lot will turn right onto W. Morgan Street.

Carpool Riders

  • Students whose youngest rider's last name begin A-L and are carpool riders will be picked up at 3:15 PM in the Harrington Street lot (see diagram, green).
  • These vehicles should turn south onto Harrington Street from Hillsborough Street and queue up along the right side of Harrington Street turning right into the Harrington lot.
  • All vehicles exiting the Harrington lot will turn right onto W. Morgan Street.
  • Students whose youngest rider's last name begin M-Z and are single-family riders will be picked up at 3:15 PM in the West Street parking lot (see diagram, blue).
  • These vehicles should turn north onto West Street from Hargett Street and queue up along West Street.
  • All vehicles exiting the West Street lot will turn right onto W. Morgan Street.

I hope I have clearly described the carpool procedures for our new location, but please feel to call me (715-3690) or e-mail me with any questions. Tuesday, September 8 is scheduled to be our first day of school in the new building; and inevitably, there will be kinks to work out. If we all look for ways to help, are patient, and courteous, then things should work out. As we gain more experience with these procedures we will make adjustments.
