GLOBAL ARTS
French
The French program at Exploris Middle School strives to provide in-depth language learning in a fun-filled atmosphere. We use a communicative approach to language learning, incorporating student centered academic activities to achieve competency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are encouraged to become comfortable and confident expressing themselves in French. Over a three-year period, we complete a first-year high school grammar text. In addition to our grammar component, elements of French culture are presented through music, food, the arts, and guest speakers. Students do research projects in which they present information on a variety of topics related to the Francophone world. Additionally, we take a series of thematic field trips, which allow the students to apply the language skills they have acquired. This year, we will visit a French pastry shop and attend a performance and have a back-stage tour of the Cirque du Soleil. March 6, 2006, Exploris Museum will co-host the 2006 Wake County French Festival. This day-long language competition allows motivated students to exhibit their developing fluency in an enthusiastic, community-wide event.
Spanish
Spanish is a critical component to a child's education at Exploris. We include all written, spoken, and listening elements of language learning. We also embed academic and cultural themes throughout the year. Spanish uses a classroom text to cover grammar and writing elements. Students have a workbook to practice specific teaching elements at home. Students also use a basic vocabulary book to increase language span. Listening and speaking exercises are part of the curriculum. Five large-scale "hands on projects" are completed each year. These are exciting projects based upon thematic work. For example, the students are currently working on reconstructing a Spanish-speaking city of their choice. They will present their work in Spanish. Cultural opportunities abound. This year students will participate in tango workshops. They will attend an internationally acclaimed presentation of dances, including tango. The students also participate in academic competition. This year, Exploris Spanish has been invited to the Ravenscroft Triangle Foreign Language Event. There is something for every learning style in the Spanish Program. We welcome you to our Program.
