Bridge Building Club and Competition
Students who enjoy teamwork, are creative, and are interested in engineering participate in this club to prepare to compete at the NCDOT Bridge Building Competition (see http://www.ncdot.org/about/kids/bridgecomp/). They first create blueprints for and build balsa wood bridges, learn engineering concepts and terminology to write an essay, and create a skit to present all their work at the competition in March.
Exploris Robotics Team
The Exploris Lego Club was started in 2010 in order to build a team of students to participate in the First Lego League Challenges (FLL). The FLL is a robotics program for 9 to 16 year olds which is designed to get children excited about science and technology -- and teach them valuable employment and life skills. In FLL, the children do the work! And the work is comprised of programming an autonomous robot (using the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot set) to score points on a thematic playing surface and create an innovative solution to a problem as part of their research project. These two elements - the Robot Game and Project - make up what FLL call the yearly Challenge.

Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl is a game of questions and answers on all topics of human knowledge that is commonly played by students enrolled in high school or college, although we are starting in middle school. Any student may audition to join the team. Quiz bowl is recommended as an enrichment activity for all students. Participants may benefit from studying a broad range of academic subjects, increasing memorization and study skills, and learning to work in teams.
QUIZ BOWL will be held on Tuesdays this year. We will begin the QUIZ BOWL club/team on Tuesday Oct 26th at 3 – 4pm in the 6W classroom. If your child is interested in joining please contact Helene helliston@explorismiddleschool.org . We are looking for interested parents to help organize & host this group as well.
Service Learning Club
For 7th and 8th grade Exploris students, we are starting a Service Learning Club called CSI Exploris (Caring Students Involved) and would like to extend an invitation for you to join the club. While you are already doing some wonderful community service work through the school, we wanted to expand on this and give you more opportunities to get involved in helping others. We realize that many of the students already do community service through their church group, scouts or other organizations. For those of you that are looking for community service opportunities please join us at our first monthly meeting on Wednesday, November 10th from 3:00 - 4:00 pm at Exploris.
At our first meeting we will do the following:
Space for the club will be limited, so only those truly interested in helping others should attend.
Upcoming CSI Monday Meeting Dates: (3:00 - 4:00 in the Media Center)
