6th GRADE

This is an exciting time for our students as they embark on a three-year adventure exploring their rapidly changing and interconnected world. As we introduce 6th graders to the systems and methods that make thematic learning at Exploris an exciting experience for both students and teachers, we take great care helping the students make a smooth transition from elementary school to middle school. Our themes are designed to reflect the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, student interests, and teacher affinities. Each grade level bases inquiries in key essential questions, the 6th grade focuses on "Who am?" and "Where do I fit in the world?" Through their work in interdisciplinary global themes students begin to develop a better understanding of themselves as learners and think of themselves as members of a community of learners.

Here are some examples of recent 6th grade themes:

Listen to Me! In the Exploris Museum exhibit "Many Voices," we learn that every voice, every person, makes a difference in the world. This includes young voices, our voices, along with everyone else in the global community. The theme "Listen to Me!" examines the rights we have as citizens and human beings, and the responsibilities that go with them. We look at the various roles we play in our family, city, country and the world, and examine how roles have changed over time. We identify some of the economic and political factors that shape the world, and how these conditions influence our rights and roles as global citizens. One person can make a difference when we understand our rights, responsibilities, and roles in society..

It's Up to Me! How do the choices I make in Raleigh impact other North Carolina ecosystems? What can I do to help preserve and restore these areas? What changes can I make in my life to keep North Carolina's environment healthy and in balance? Students investigate these issues as well as some other major issues that impact North Carolina ecosystems. Students examine and weigh the opportunities/costs/benefits used to make informed decisions regarding the environment and create a course of action.

We're All Related Can trade promote understanding between nations and world peace? Can we contribute to this idea as individuals? Understanding the role of trade in our own country as well as our ties with the world will help us as U.S. citizens to determine what our role is and what our role will be in the future. Students investigate how trade connects people and nations around the world. Students are encouraged to apply this information to their own lives by discovering how these issues impact them as an individual, a family and a community. This theme leads students down a moral and informative path as they evaluate why all nations don't have equal access to essential goods and services.

Sixth Grade. . .it's the place where it all starts
